Meet George Karpathios, physio at Nepean

My passion for physio was ignited following my many injuries from playing at a representative level of footy. With firsthand experience, I understand the frustration of injuries and their toll on physical and mental well-being.

As a supplement to my training, I developed my knowledge and interest in barbell sports which I still rely on today. This environment has been crucial for me throughout my life as it serves as an outlet and time to “switch off”, which I am sure a lot of you can resonate with.

Outside of the clinic, you’ll catch me spending my time outdoors. That can be fishing, off-roading, at the beach, or kicking a footy around at the park. If camping isn’t involved, I will probably enjoy it.

In our sessions, I’ll do my best to work out a clear plan you are happy with. My philosophy is for you not to miss any training sessions (within reason), and work with you and the surrounding team to achieve your goals no matter your level of skill, or stage of rehab.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO PEOPLE’S LIVES?

Making a difference to people’s lives means assisting people to have the ability and function to do what is most important to them without fear or repercussions. Movement is fundamental in all aspects of life, whether this means playing sports as a weekend warrior or lifting up the grand kids.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO PHYSIOTHERAPY?

A history of injuries resulted in a lot of time with physios. I understand from a personal perspective how frustrating it is to miss training from a mental and physical perspective. Here I grew my passion and eventually undertook my own path to help people.

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU'VE EVER RECEIVED?

Listen more than you speak.

WHAT TYPES OF PATIENTS DO YOU ENJOY WORKING WITH THE MOST AND WHY?

I love working with people who are passionate about their health and fitness. My main sports have consisted of representative Rugby League, which essentially translated into barbell sports to supplement this. My knowledge is a direct reflection of my experience. If you have a passion to train I want to work with you to achieve high-level goals, no matter your level of skill, or what stage of rehab you are at.

SHOUTOUT ONE PERSON THAT HAS INSPIRED YOU AND WHY?

Bethany Hamilton is one of the best international women’s pro surfers to date. At 13 she lost an arm from a shark attack. I am certain after this she heard a thousand times to give up on surfing, similarly to many health professionals giving advice to stop lifting and exercising indefinitely because of an injury. Bethany has proven that the sky is the limit and with the right rehab and team you can achieve anything.

IF THEY MADE A MOVIE ABOUT YOU, WHO WOULD YOU WANT TO PLAY YOU?

Without a doubt, Dave Bautista

WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU HAVE ACHIEVED THAT, IF YOU COULD TIME TRAVEL, YOU WOULD WANT TO TELL YOUR 10 YEAR OLD SELF?

Knowing that I have chosen a profession that I enjoy. All those exams and late night studying were worth it.

WHAT IS YOUR PROMISE TO PATIENTS?

My promise is to help you return to your meaningful goals as soon as possible, missing as little as possible. This means working with you and the respective team collaboratively to devise a suitable and achievable plan.
