How do you calculate ‘perfect’ posture?
Sure, ‘perfect’ posture would be the point where the peak of your natural curves in your spine have the body’s weight distribution spread evenly throughout the vertebrae and distributes force up and down the spine efficiently.
how likely is it that you’ll be able to maintain this?
It is completely unrealistic to maintain ‘perfect’ (textbook) posture in daily life.
This is the question that I ask most patients that are looking to improve their posture - “how will we know that we’ve achieved our goal?”. In particular, this question hits hard because most of the time, people aren’t functionally impacted by their posture, ie. it doesn’t actually stop them from doing anything… Most of the time, they just feel hunched, have some difficulty sitting up straight and more often get nagged at for ‘being slouched all the time’.
Here are two measures I like to use…
Unsolicited compliments from others - did their spouse or friends notice that they’re different or ‘taller’"?
Overhead and spinal range of motion - how far can they move through their shoulders and through their thoracic spine?
