How do you calculate âperfectâ posture?
Sure, âperfectâ posture would be the point where the peak of your natural curves in your spine have the bodyâs weight distribution spread evenly throughout the vertebrae and distributes force up and down the spine efficiently.
how likely is it that youâll be able to maintain this?
It is completely unrealistic to maintain âperfectâ (textbook) posture in daily life.
This is the question that I ask most patients that are looking to improve their posture - âhow will we know that weâve achieved our goal?â. In particular, this question hits hard because most of the time, people arenât functionally impacted by their posture, ie. it doesnât actually stop them from doing anything⊠Most of the time, they just feel hunched, have some difficulty sitting up straight and more often get nagged at for âbeing slouched all the timeâ.
Here are two measures I like to useâŠ
Unsolicited compliments from others - did their spouse or friends notice that theyâre different or âtallerâ"?
Overhead and spinal range of motion - how far can they move through their shoulders and through their thoracic spine?
